Try the new Premium McWraps from McDonalds (first come first serve BOGO coupons!)

I have to be honest. When we go out to eat, I am not usually the one that votes for McDonald's. More often then not we end up there for the kids. My husband loves them but my belly disagrees. I usually stick to salads or McChickens. Don't get me wrong, I love a good fatty burger every once in a while but I still feel hungry after one and end up sick if I eat more. However... McDonald's recently released a new full sized Premium McWrap and they really hit the spot here. This is no "snacker" people. My husband and I indulged in an opportunity to taste test the three different kinds (Chicken and Bacon, Chicken and Ranch and Sweet Chili Chicken) and the first thing I noticed was how large these things were! My husband is a 'grab 3 burgers for himself'' kind of guy and he didn't go back to buy a second on these. I felt over stuffed when mine was finished.

My husband and I both agreed that our favorite was the Chicken and Ranch with the Chicken and Bacon being close second. We both liked it crispy and we have gone back twice after our taste test opportunity. Now I have something I look forward to getting while the kids play till their hearts content in the play place. I wasn't so much in love with the Sweet Chili Chicken because it tasted like a chicken wrap with Italian dressing on it... not so much chili. It was still alright though and very hearty. I should have measured them but if I was to guess, the wrap itself was probably 10 inches long and really full.

Here is some of the details of whats in them and the calorie intake. I have some BOGO coupons to share as well with some of you. If you like what you see and would like to try it for yourself, please email me at langleylove@gmail.com. Since I only have a handful, these are on a first come first serve basis. One per family (and no duplicate email addresses please). I will email you to let you know if you are one that gets a coupon and ask for your address to send it to you. Good luck!

The X by Lorena Bathey - a book review

About the book:

Clarissa Hadonfield had it all. She lived in a lovely home surrounded by affluent intellectuals, had a successful husband, and two phenomenal teenage boys. With the ring of a doorbell she finds her life substituted by one where she has to fight for her children against an evil she never knew existed and had been sleeping next to for the last twenty years. When Clarissa's X shows his true colors, she finds she must become a strong woman who cannot only grow prize-winning flowers but can place a devastating roundhouse kick. Teaming up with Bryce Brightman, an ex-FBI agent, she uncovers a woman whose only goal is to save her children. This story is about what a woman can do when she put her brains, her brawn, and her boots into changing the course of her life and protecting the ones she loves
My thoughts:

I got this book out of the mailbox at around 12:30-1:00. I started reading it an hour or two later and was done that night. This shows you that it was a page turner from start to finish. The chapters were short enough to keep you in the mindset of reading just one more and the cliffhangers kicked you into doing just that. This being said I wouldn't rate this book with 5 stars and here's why.

While I found that the characters were easy enough to get to know and love, I would have liked to see her fill the novel in more. I found some situations very realistic while others were just a little too convenient, which brings this book to an "enjoyable weekend read" status and wouldn't be the first thing I would grab off the shelf. It just felt like a young adult book with adult situations.

I did like the realistic human nature displayed in this book. The emotions that Clarissa was going through and the way she handled herself were very real and believable. The reactions of both the boys (as different as they were),  made it extremely easy to relate to the characters. In many of the reviews I read that there was female empowerment bursting through the chapters but I was very glad to see that it was more of a "mama bear" story and not so much a women's lib statement. Overall, I would give this book 3.5-4 stars out of 5. The base was strong and the meat was there but the flavor was a little weak for me to want the recipe (if you know what I mean). I would still be happy to read any other books by Lorena that I come across. After all, it was quite enjoyable and easy to get into.

Inside The Cover: The Icecutter's Daughter by Tracie Peterson - a book review

Title: The Icecutter's Daughter
Author: Tracie Peterson
Genre: Christian Fiction, Historical Romance
Rating: 5/5

Book Description:

As the lone female in a houseful of men, Merrill Krause dedicates her life to caring for her family and their business, as her dying mother asked. Besides, it suits her; she's never felt like she fits what most people expect in a girl--she'd rather work with her father’s horses and assist with the ice harvest. And though she’s been mostly content up to this point, a part of her wonders if there will ever be anyone who will notice her amid the bevy of brothers determined to protect her from any possible suitors.

When Rurik Jorgenson arrives in their small Minnesota town to join his uncle's carpentry business, he soon crosses paths with Merrill. But unlike other men, who are often frightened away by her older brothers, Rurik isn't intimidated by them or by Merrill's strength and lack of femininity. The attraction between them begins to build...until Rurik's former fiance shows up with wild claims that bring serious consequences to Rurik.

Can Rurik and Merrill learn to trust God--and each other--when scandal threatens their newfound love?

My thoughts:

Even though I found this book predictable all the way through, I was surprised to find me tearing up at the end. This book stirred something inside and just moved me. I love it when you read a book where you just feel good after like when you eat healthy or after a work out. This book is good for the soul. It had subtle lessons sprinkled throughout about trusting God, gossiping and where it leads and not to judge. I found familiarity in the characters, especially with Merrill and she inspires you to be a better person with her flaws and all. So even though I wasn't blown away with the plot or it's lack of surprises, I still gave it a five for Tracie's writing, her amazing characters (loved Granny!) and the way the book touched me. I will certainly be grabbing all the Tracie Peterson books that come floating through my way!

Cover Reveal! The Year Of The Great Seventh by Teresa Orts

Teresa Orts and Drayton Press proudly announce the cover reveal of The Year Of The Great Seventh, Teresa's first novel.

Sophie has always felt out of step—an outsider, even amongst friends in her high school with all the hype about celebrity culture. Her life in L.A. seems to have been already written for her, but when her junior year starts, it all takes a drastic turn. When she crosses paths with the school's heartthrob, Nate Werner, they fall for each other in a way neither can understand. What they don’t know is that by giving in to their desires, they are unlocking an ancient Egyptian prophecy that threatens to return Earth to the dark ages.

To undo the curse, Nate and Sophie embark on an adventure that takes them across the country. But their quest is not only to save the world as they know it. It is also a fight for their very survival. Behind the scenes, there are those that are counting on them to fail.

Scroll down to the bottom of this article to read an excerpt  from this upcoming novel The book is set to launch on July 6th, 2013. Don't miss that along with my full review and thoughts.

Teresa's story, in her own words...

Unlike most authors, I didn’t start writing books when I was five years old. In fact, I’d never been too interested in reading or writing. Hanging out with friends in the small Spanish town I grew up in always seemed more appealing than anything a book could offer. It took about twenty-seven years and a global financial meltdown for me to discover the magic world of writing.

At the time, I was living in New York City, and one morning I discovered I was no longer expected at my sixty-hour-a-week investment banking job. Most of my friends had very demanding jobs, so I spent most days wandering around on my own.

Like most unemployed people, I started living through the nights and sleeping through the days. New York is known as the city that never sleeps for a good reason! One night, tired of surfing the web and watching TV, I opened a Word document and started typing a short story, which I saved in my computer with little interest. That was the day Nate and Sophie were born.

Days later, since the financial industry seemed to be going into a downward spiral, I decided to spend three months traveling through Southeast Asia and New Zealand. I thought, naïve me, that by the time I returned, the financial crisis would have come to an end.

Something really strange happened to me during that trip. No matter where I went, I couldn’t stop thinking about the story. Nate and Sophie followed me everywhere. No matter how hard I tried to forget about them, they just wouldn’t go away. At the beginning, I thought I was losing my mind, but soon after, I realized I had to continue writing the story.

When I came back to New York, I went right back into it, and that’s how The Year of the Great Seventh was created. Unfortunately, halfway through the novel, I received a letter from the immigration department informing me that, with no job, I was no longer welcome in the United States. Without much of a choice, my boyfriend and I decided to pack our lives, along with my half-drafted manuscript, and begin another exciting adventure in London, where we now live.

Excerpt:

Admitting I wasn’t going to fall asleep, I emerged from under the bed covers, went over to the windows, and sat on the floor. They say if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Well, if the city lights were going to keep me awake, I might as well enjoy the view.
Crossing my legs in the lotus position, I admired the city skyline. The other glass tower across from us seemed to be private apartments. Most of the floors had their lights on. The energy of this city was captivating. Life continued on through the night in the city that never slept.

It was starting to snow. The frosty flakes resembled white cotton candy. They seemed to be defying the laws of gravity as they were suspended on the air and then swirled up into the sky. It was probably due to the air current caused by the tall buildings. But as things stood in my life at the moment, anything seemed possible.

The traffic was as dense as rush hour in downtown L.A. Cars jammed around Columbus Circle, and no one thought twice about leaning on the horn, even though it was past midnight.

In one of the apartments opposite, a man was sitting by the window, typing on a laptop. The room was dark, but the reflection of the computer screen lit up his face. I could see him clearly. It was as though we were sitting across from each other. I was sure he could see me, too. We were so close, but at the same time, so far. This must be the big city syndrome where you can feel so alone amongst so many people. And knowing that Nate was just across the wall only enhanced the feeling.

I had to start blocking any thoughts of Nate. I had to give myself a break or I was going to start losing my mind. Unfortunately, I was aware that ignoring a problem wasn’t likely to make it go away. I couldn’t believe Nate had planned to hide the stain on his back from me. How long did he think he could pretend everything was going to be fine?

Dad taught me to only believe what could be proved by science, but this lulled me into a state of denial. Nate was vanishing with the tick of the clock, and I had to help him. I wasn’t sure how yet, but I couldn’t fail him. I wanted to slap myself to throw myself into action. How could I be so passive when I was losing the only thing I wanted?

The man in the apartment across from me was drinking from a cup and flicking through the pages of a book that he had next to the laptop. After scanning a few more pages, he continued to type. I wondered what he was doing. I wanted to think he was writing a detective novel based in 1950s Manhattan.

The man stopped typing and stared openly at me, as if he also needed to share his secrets with a stranger. It was snowing hard, and thousands of snowflakes playfully spiraled up into the sky, proving reality had many dimensions. The simple stare from a distant stranger was appeasing that loneliness that was taking hold of me.

I couldn’t stop staring back. Here, sitting on the floor of this grandiose room, in the epicenter of the madness of this city, I just felt so small. How was I, this tiny, fragile girl, going to make the world change its course?

The man with the computer—as if he could hear my thoughts—smiled at me and nodded. Without uttering a word, and with the power of our surroundings, this stranger confirmed that, yes, I could do whatever I gave myself to. It was probably a coincidence, but there were moments like this when the universe conspired to prove that life was full of magic moments. You just needed to learn to see past what was in front of you.

The man went back to typing on his computer, unconscious that with just one stare he’d provided me with the courage I lacked. I was beginning to fall in love, but in this case, with New York City. There was something about the anonymity of this city that brought us closer as humans.

Inside The Cover: Against The Tide - a novel by Elizabeth Camden

Book Title: Against The Tide
Author: Elizabeth Camden
Rating: 5/5
Genre: Adventure, Romance, Christian Fiction

Book Description (taken from Elizabeth's website):
Boston of 1891 is a city of hope and ambition, where mariners, merchants, and dreamers thrive in the cobblestone streets of America’s most historic city. Within the harbor of Boston’s naval shipyard, Lydia Pallas has become a trusted assistant to an Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Lydia’s remarkable language skills bring her to the attention of Alexander Banebridge, a mysterious man on a quest to rid the world of the scourge of opium. Only Lydia has the rare combination of language skills and courage he needs to advance his cause. A man as coolly analytical as he is relentless, Bane never bargained on falling in love with Lydia. As he battles the bittersweet love that grows between them, Bane’s mission will take Lydia away from everything—and everyone—she ever held dear.

 Meet Elizabeth (Taken from website)

A research librarian and associate professor, Elizabeth Camden has a master’s in history from the University of Virginia and a master’s in library science from Indiana University. She has published several articles for academic publications and is the author of four nonfiction history books. Her ongoing fascination with history and love of literature have led her to write inspirational fiction. Elizabeth lives with her husband in central Florida.

My thoughts:
I was a little uncertain about reading this book because the subject of being at sea was not interesting to me and I was unfamiliar with Elizabeth Camden's work. I finally decided to give it a shot and boy am I ever glad I did! First off, this book was not as much a sea tale as it was an adventure and a romance. Elizabeth has blown me away with her character development. Right from the get go you are falling in love with them and Alexander Banebridge, the leading man, is one of my favorite characters of all time! The kinship between Alexander and Lydia is hilarious, charming and extremely entertaining.  I don't normally put excerpts in my book reviews but I would love to show you what I mean. Here are a few to show the personalities:

He knew she was scheming something in that clever half-Turkish, half-Greek brain of hers, but it was hard to resist. "Why would I want to do that?"
"Why to correct this shocking void in my education,"she said. "Now that you have pointed out my howling ignorance, it would be cruel to leave me in this educational deficit."
He watched the way her eyes fairly glittered and her foot tapped out a steady rhythm as she awaited his answer. Truly, if he wanted to correct her ignorance, he would train her not to reveal her thoughts so easily as she planned her little scheme. Her foot tapping was a dead giveaway sshe was up to something. But really, he was too enchanted and curious to see what she had up her sleeve.

"Why would I marry a man so much prettier than I? It would be a daily humiliation."
The warmth in Bane's eyes did not flicker. He kissed the back of her hand and winked at her.   "Think of all the embarrassment I will suffer marrying someone who is wealthier than I. People will say I married you for your fortune and that you married me for my looks. It is a dilemma."
She could not stop grinning at him. "I suppose we should get married just so we can make each other miserable."

I just love the sense of humor that flows throughout this book and it is one of the few that I will read again later on down the road. Now I will have one eye constantly peeled for Elizabeth Camden's books. What a fantastic find!

Starflower by Anne Elisabeth Stengl - a book review

About the book:

When a cursed dragon-witch kidnaps lovely Lady Gleamdren, Bard Eanrin sets boldly forth on a rescue mission . . . and a race against his rival for Gleamdren's favor. Intent upon his quest, the last thing the immortal Faerie needs is to become mixed up with the troubles of an insignificant mortal.

But when he stumbles upon a maiden trapped in an enchanted sleep, he cannot leave her alone in the dangerous Wood Between. One waking kiss later, Eanrin finds his path entangled with that of young Starflower. A strange link exists between this mortal girl and the dragon-witch. Will Starflower prove the key to Lady Gleamdren's rescue? Or will the dark power from which she flees destroy both her and her poet rescuer?

This is book #4 in The Goldstone Wood series but is a prequel and is set many years before the others.

My thoughts:

I hate to join the crowds and sound like a copy cat but using the words entrancing and captivating are the only way to go. However, I disagreed with a lot of the reviews I have read out there on Starflower that said it started out slow. Anne's style of writing took me hostage and flew me to the end far too quickly! I love how her descriptions made the figments of ones imagination almost tangible and the impossible believable. For instance, it is fairly common for a river to be referred to as angry or wild and in Starflower this saying is brought to life. A river has put the mortal girl in a trance by pulling "it's fingers through the long hair" and went mad with rage when the girl was rescued and taken away. The characters were easy to love or hate and always kept me intrigued. I am stoked that I had the opportunity to read this book before discovering the others since I don't like going back for prequels. Unfortunately, I may do just that since I don't think I can wait 3 more months to return to the Goldstone Wood series. I have already convinced the local library to get the series and I will be keeping my ears perked and hopes raised high that I might be able to see it on the big screen someday!

About The Author:

Anne Elisabeth is the award-winning author of the Tales of Goldstone Wood, a series of fantasy adventure novels told in the classic Fairy Tale style. She is married to the handsome man she met at fencing class and lives with him, a gaggle of cats, and one long-suffering dog in NC.

Unglued Devotional by Lysa TerKeurst - a book review

Book Description:
This companion devotional to the bestselling book Unglued provides encouragement to help readers handle emotional struggles. Including a daily opening Scripture, Thought for the Day, devotion, and closing prayer, this book helps readers begin a 60-day journey in learning to positively process raw emotions, such as fear, anger, and regret.

My thoughts:
If you are a mother, I feel confident in saying that you know exactly how it feels to come unglued on the ones you love. Stress can take it's toll, especially when you are unhappy in your circumstances and can't seem to see the end of it!

At church our pastor stressed the importance of keeping a prayer journal and this devotional was the perfect companion. It seemed that this devotional couldn't have come at any more perfect timing and it just went hand in hand with what I was feeling and my daily prayers I was writing down.

Each day you will get a lovely story from her own personal life or a loved ones,  adds a thought for the day and tops it off with a daily prayer. While the stories are easy to relate to, there is Scripture sprinkled throughout for encouragement and reference. Lysa has done a great job writing a devotional that feels like a daily dose of soul medicine to keep you on the right track and prevents you from coming unglued. Love it Lysa! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and prayers with us!
